What is a VPN and how does it work?

What a VPN protects, how it changes your public IP and which security guarantees it cannot provide.

VPN in plain English

A VPN creates an encrypted connection between your device and a VPN server. Websites generally see the server's public IP rather than your home network's public IP.

What it can protect

A VPN can protect network contents from casual observation on the path to the VPN server. It does not stop websites or apps from collecting data you provide, and trust shifts toward the VPN operator.

Important limits

VPN does not guarantee anonymity. It does not erase cookies, stop phishing or fix malware. Keep HTTPS, OS updates and multi-factor authentication enabled.
